Highly skilled professionals in the Radiation Oncology Department draw on some of the most sophisticated tools used today in the war against cancer. They include intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), a world-class treatment that allows for precise radiation of tumor cells at higher doses without harming surrounding healthy tissue. IMRT has proven effective in the management of tumors previously deemed untreatable.
Minimally invasive, robotic treatment options have the potential to offer shorter recovery times to patients requiring surgery. CyberKnife is an advanced robotic device used by surgeons and radiation oncologists to treat many forms of cancerous and non-cancerous conditions anywhere in the body. This device uses CAT scan and MRI images along with state-of-the-art computer technology to plan and treat the affected area. Therapeutic radiation beams are administered with sub-millimeter accuracy using an x-ray guidance system that tracks patient and tumor movement. This allows tumors to be treated in any location of the body without placing an immobilizing frame on the patient.
